The Problem

VolkerRail approached Quattro Plant to assist with upgrade works on a 17 mile stretch of track between Preston and Blackpool, upgrading the section to OHLE. A station upgrade and new platforms at Blackpool were also required.

The Quattro Plant Solution

Works were run from the Manchester depot, with all depot staff – including operators, office personnel, fitters and transport teams – fully briefed and engaged on all aspects of the project. Led by depot manager Glynn Croft, regular updates and team briefings of project information meant that VolkerRail contacts had multiple points of contact for updates and information 24 hours a day.

With a significant amount of highly specialist civils plant required to deliver the project, it was necessary to cross-hire a number of specific machines. This specialist equipment was sourced by another Quattro Plant depot, who, thanks to their geographical location have a strong relationship with a local firm and were able to secure the important equipment.

In order to guarantee delivering the project with minimal downtime, the Quattro Plant team also ensured there were spare key machines located on site, to be able to immediately allocate should additional service be required.

The Result

The project was successfully handed back on time and in budget.

The team worked highly effectively, carrying out over 5,000 shifts on site with no incidents and minimal downtime, delivering a safe and efficient project.

Following the requirement for the cross-hiring of specialist civils equipment on this high-profile project, Quattro Group has since acquired AB2000. This acquisition provides Quattro Plant with access to a significant and varied selection of civils equipment, perfectly complementing the existing rail fleet.
